UK-Japan Music Society, UK-Japan Choir & UK-Japan Consort

UK-Japan Music Society was founded by Jonathan Gregory in 1992 as a result of cultural interaction with Japanese musicians he experienced during the Japan Festival 1991. It organises concerts and activities to promote friendship and mutual understanding of Japanese and British people and culture through music. The Choir of Japanese and British singers are drawn from London, Cambridge and Leicester areas. Performances include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, St John and St Matthew Passions, Cantatas, Magnificat, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Maria Teresa Mass, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, music of Purcell, Tallis, Byrd, Vivaldi, Faure, others, as well as modern and contemporary Japanese choral and instrumental music. UK-Japan Choir has been rehearsing at Grosvenor Chapel since 2015. UK-Japan Music Society celebrated 25th Year in 2016-17, and took the Choir and young musicians to Japan Tour in April 2017, visited and performed in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Kyoto, Kobe and Toyama, as well as masterclasses and recitals in Rikkyo schools and Tokyo College of Music. In December, the Society launched UK-Japan Consort, which is a group of young semi and professional musicians including those based in music conservatoires – singers and instrumentalists, both Japanese and non Japanese, in order to give support and promote young musicians in Japan and UK.
